Column not found in field list

Error Message

SQLSTATE[42S22]: Column not found: 1054 Unknown column 'posts.created_by' in 'field list'

Cause

Query references a column that doesn't exist in the table. The column may have been renamed, not yet created, or the column name is misspelled.

Solution

Create a migration to add the missing column. Check the column name for typos. Verify the schema matches what the code expects.

Code Example

Fix
// Add missing column via migration
Schema::table('posts', function (Blueprint $table) {
    $table->foreignId('created_by')->nullable()->after('user_id');
});

php artisan migrate

Debugging Steps

  1. Check the database schema with DESCRIBE posts
  2. Run php artisan migrate:status
  3. Search the codebase for the column name
  4. Check recent migrations that may have altered the table

Prevention

Always create migrations for schema changes. Keep model attributes in sync with database columns. Test migrations before deploying.
