Undefined property
Error Message
Undefined property: App\Models\User::$nonexistent_field
Cause
Accessing a property that doesn't exist on the model. The column may not exist in the database table, or it's not in the $fillable array and you're trying to access it directly.
Solution
Verify the column exists in the migration/schema. If it\'s a computed attribute, create an accessor method. Check the $fillable array if you\'re creating/updating.
Code Example
Fix
// Wrong - accessing non-existent property
echo $user->nonexistent_field;
// Right - create an accessor for computed properties
protected function fullName(): Attribute
{
return Attribute::make(
get: fn () => "{$this->attributes['first_name']} {$this->attributes['last_name']}",
);
}
// Check if property exists before accessing
if (isset($user->phone)) {
echo $user->phone;
}
Debugging Steps
- Check the database schema for the column
- Run php artisan migrate:status to verify migrations
- Use $user->getAttributes() to see all attributes
- Check if the column is in $fillable or $guarded
Prevention
Always verify database columns match model attributes. Use $fillable for mass assignment protection. Define accessors for computed properties.
